Cultural HistoryThe Nakasendo, steeped in rich cultural history, is an ancient highway that once connected Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) during Japan's Edo period (1603-1868). This historic trail served as a vital lifeline for travelers and merchants, offering a glimpse into Japan's past. The Usui Pass, a part of the Nakasendo, is particularly noteworthy. It's a mountain pass that offered breathtaking vistas and a challenging route for travelers. The Usui Pass was transformed in the late 19th century with the construction of a railway tunnel, symbolizing Japan's modernization. Today, it's a place where history and progress converge, and it's a testament to Japan's enduring cultural legacy and its ability to embrace change while preserving its heritage. This is where our journey begins.

Food and DiningSavor an exquisite Washoku meal that's a culinary masterpiece deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. Washoku, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is celebrated for its balance of flavors, textures, and artful presentation. The meal at Momiji no Yu is a harmonious blend of seasonal ingredients, often featuring fresh vegetables, succulent seafood, and tender, marbled meats. From meticulously prepared sashimi to the umami-rich miso soup, each dish pays homage to Japan's culinary heritage. The serene surroundings of the onsen enhance the dining experience, making it a delightful fusion of nature, relaxation, and gastronomy, truly encapsulating the essence of Washoku. As part of our Perfect Day experience we always book at least one Washoku style meal.

Lodging and HospitalityThe GS Astuto 'Riders House' is located in a 165 year old Japanese 'kominka' on the Old Nakasendo in Matsuida Village (Shuku 16). The converted farmhouse also serves as our cafe , cycling shop and staging location for most of our rides. The rooms are Showa Era Japanese with some modern touches such as raised futon beds, air conditioning, tatami flooring and high speed internet. We have a large common area to relax and prepare for the day(s) rides including shower, bath, plenty of storage and outdoor relaxation area. We do our best to service everyone with a bit of charm, wit and the best possible food and gear we can offer.
